QUALIA is a pattern recognition game. Each card has 4 attributes, each with 4 possible values.
Select 4 cards that form a valid QUALE. A group where every attribute follows one of three patterns.
For every attribute across your 4 cards, the values must match one of these patterns:
Each of the 4 attributes is checked independently. All four must pass their own pattern test.
Every attribute uses all four values exactly once — one of each shape, color, count, and fill.
| Attr | C1 | C2 | C3 | C4 | Pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | tri | hex | oval | star | all diff ✓ |
| Color | yellow | green | red | blue | all diff ✓ |
| Count | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | all diff ✓ |
| Fill | solid | stripe | check | empty | all diff ✓ |
Each attribute has exactly two of one value, two of another. The pairs can be different for each attribute.

Find 4 cards where every attribute is all-different. Each shape, color, count, and fill appears exactly once.
Find 4 cards where every attribute forms two pairs. Exactly 2 cards share each value.
Real QUALIAs mix patterns. This one has 3 attributes all-different and 1 attribute as two pairs. You have 3 attempts — after that the answer is revealed.
Each QUALE you find earns up to 3 stars. Wrong guesses before finding it cost one star. You have 6 total attempts.
When the game ends, any missed QUALIAs will be highlighted on the board — so you can see what you missed. Same board for everyone each day!
Select 4 cards forming a valid QUALE. Each of the 4 attributes (shape, color, count, fill) must independently follow one of three patterns: all-same, all-different, or two pairs.
Qualia (singular: quale) is the philosophical and neuroscientific term for the subjective, felt quality of a perceptual experience — the "redness" of red, the taste/smell of coffee. This game is named QUALIA because what you find is genuinely subjective: there is no single right answer, only patterns you perceive. Two players can find entirely different valid groups from the same board.
